Hoskuld's Place and there was a great many people before hand

Hoskuld and Hrut were on one bench and the Bridegroom
on another (facing each other)
Hallgerður sat á palli og samdi sér vel. Þjóstólfur gekk með reidda öxi og
lét hið
dólglegasta og lét það engi sem vissi.
Hallgerð sat on the cross-bench (at the top of the hall
- away from the entrance)
and looked well (made an impression)
Thjostolf went about with an axe in a most hostile
(?? belligerent) manner But no one knew him (or else
took no notice )
Frankly I think Thjostolf has totally lost it
now
En er boði var lokið fór Hallgerður suður með þeim. En er þau
komu suður til
Varmalækjar þá spurði Þórarinn Hallgerði ef hún vildi taka við
búráðum
And when the feast was over Hallgerð went south with
them (her husband and brother-in-law) but when they came south to Warmbrook,
Thorarin asked Hallgerð if she wiykd take over the running of the
household
"Eigi vil eg það," segir
hún.
"I do not want that" says
she
Hallgerður sat mjög á sér um veturinn og líkaði við hana
ekki illa.
Hallgerð kept well to herself that
Winter (restrained - behaved) and no one thought any ill of
her
En um vorið töluðu þeir um fjárhagi
sína bræður og mælti Þórarinn: "Eg vil
gefa ykkur upp búið að Varmalæk því að
ykkur er það hægst um hönd.
In the Spring they (the brothers) discussed their
cattle pasture and Thorarinn said "I will hand over to you (two) the Warmbrook
Farm because it is handiest to you .
En eg mun fara suður í Laugarnes og búa þar. En
Engey skulum við eiga báðir saman."
But I will go south to Hotsprings
and live there but we will hold Engey together
Glúmur vildi að svo
væri. Fór Þórarinn suður byggðum en þau bjuggu þar
eftir.
Glum was willing to this. Thorarinn
went South to live amd they lived/stayed there (remained
behind)
Réð Hallgerður sér hjón. Hún var örlynd og fengsöm. En
um sumarið
fæddi hún meybarn. Glúmur spurði Hallgerði hvað heita
skyldi.
Hallgerð managed the home she was
free handed and generous and in the summer she had a Girl-Child.
Glum asked Hallgerð what she would be called
"Hana skal kalla
eftir föðurmóður minni og skal heita Þorgerður því að hún
var komin frá
Sigurði Fáfnisbana í föðurætt sína að langfeðgatölu. "
"She shall be called after my
father's mother, Thorgeir, because she descended from Sigurð Fafnis-bane on her
Father's side through the male line
(must be the one they called
Sigurd the Dragon slayer)
Mærin var vatni ausin og þetta nafn
gefið. Hún óx þar upp og gerðist lík
móður sinni að yfirlitum
The girl was sprinkled with water
and given that name, she grew up to be like her mother in
appearance.
Þau sömdust vel við Glúmur og Hallgerður og fór
svo fram um hríð.
Things seemed well with Glum and
Hallgerð and it continued so for a while
Þau tíðindi spurðust úr
Bjarnarfirði norðan að Svanur hafði róið að
veiðiskap um vorið og kom að þeim
austanveður mikið og rak þá upp að
Veiðilausu og týndust þar.
They heard news from Bjorn's Firth up North that
Svan had rowed out to fish (Z) in the spring but a great Easterly gale came upon
them and washed them ashore at Fishing-less and he perished there
(yes Grace - t'was doubrless a place not known for good
fishing prospects)
En fiskimenn þeir er voru í Kaldbak þóttust sjá
Svan
ganga inn í fjallið Kaldbakshorn og var honum vel þar fagnað en sumir
mæltu
því í mót og kváðu engu gegna en það vissu allir að hann fannst hvorki
lífs
né dauður.
But fishermen who were at Cold-back thought they saw
Svan go into the Fells at Colld-Back's horn and get a warm welcome but
some spoke against it and said it was not so But all were
certain he was never seen again alive nor dead
En er Hallgerður spurði þessi tíðindi þótti henni skaði
mikill eftir móðurbróður sinn
And when Hallgerð heard these
tidings she thought/felt the loss of her Uncle a great
matter.
Glúmur bauð Þórarni að skipta um löndin.
Glum asked Thorarinn to exchange
(farms ) - the land - their holdings
Hann kveðst eigi það
vilja "en seg þú Hallgerði ef eg lifi þér lengur að eg
ætla mér
Varmalæk."
But he said he did not want
"but you tell Hallgerð that if I live the longer I would take Warmbrook for
myself
Glúmur segir Hallgerði.
Hún svaraði: "Maklegur er
Þórarinn þess frá oss."
Glum told Hallgerð.
She replied "Thorarinn has the right to expect this
from us
I am indebted to Grace for the translations of these
place names and have snagged them - they are good, I had a story - long ago of
Sigurð-Dragonslayer - that must be the same one from whom Thorgeir
descended
As for the layout of the Hall I have that -
somewhere in one of my books -
so many books so little time !!
I have underlined some - I think this is a good plan to
invite people to comment - for I tend not to be too literal - after all it is a
story - and I see no ill in translating to our modern idiom now and
then
