"Hvað þykir þér ráð?" sagði Höskuldur.

"What  seems to be your advice" said Hoskuld

"Vel skalt þú svara og segja þó kost og löst á konunni," segir Hrútur.

"Well shall you reply (i.e. - make nice)  and say both good and bad of the woman" says Hrut

En í þessu tali þeirra bræðra ganga þeir út gestirnir. Höskuldur og Hrútur
gengu í mót þeim. Fagnaði Hrútur vel Þórarni og þeim báðum bræðrum.

And in thie conversation of the brothers, the guests came outside. Hoskuld and Hrut

went to meet them. Hrut greeted Thorarinn and both the brothers (were made welcome) 

Síðan gengu þeir allir samt á tal og mælti Þórarinn: "Eg er kominn hingað
með Glúmi bróður mínum þess erindis að biðja Hallgerðar dóttur þinnar,
Höskuldur, til handa Glúmi bróður mínum.

Then (afterwards) they all went together for a talk and Thorarinn said "I am come here

with Glum my brother - this purpose ro ask for Hallgerð your daughter -

Hoskuld, to the hand of Glum my brother

Then said Hrut " I may give you (both) some advice - if you are willing not to let

what happenned before with Hallgerð stand in the way

 

að Þjóstólfur fari ekki suður með henni þó að ráðin takist og veri þar aldrei þrem nóttum
lengur, nema Glúmur lofi,

that Thjostolf travels not south with her and so he must not visit more than three nights

unless Glum agrees

 

en falli óheilagur fyrir Glúmi ef hann er lengur,

for something unholy (disastrous?) may happen to Glum if it is longer

en heimilt á Glúmur að lofa það, en ekki er það mitt ráð.

to stay - Glum can permit but I do not advise it

 

 

Skal nú og eigi svo fara sem fyrr að Hallgerði sé eigi sagt. Skal hún vita allan þenna
kaupmála og sjá Glúm og ráða sjálf hvort hún vill eiga hann eða eigi og megi
hún eigi öðrum kenna þó að eigi verði vel. Skal þetta allt vélalaust vera."

Shall this not be done as before - that Halgerð is not told  She shall know all the terms

if the contract, and see Glum and decide for herself if she will marry him or not,

and she may not blame others if things are not well. Shall this be free from deceit

Þórarinn mælti: "Nú er sem jafnan að það mun best gegna að þín ráð séu

Yes right they are talking to Hrut aren't they - I still find it odd that the Older Brother - Hoskuld

seems to have no confidence in himself but  must run to his younger sib for advice

There{ for something unholy (disastrous?) may happen to Glum if it is longer}

I have seen the suggestion that Glum can call him outlaw and kill him - in two translations, but I could not see any excuse for this

- I mean - by all means kill him if he is a nuisance but that is not specifically in the O/N text not to what passes with me for a mind
