Þá þagnaði Mörður og réðst um við vini sína um hólmgönguna.

Then Morð was silent and consulted with his friends about the duel.

Honum svaraði Jörundur goði: "Eigi þarft þú við oss ráð að eiga um þetta mál
því að þú veist ef þú berst við Hrút að þú munt láta bæði lífið og féið. Er
honum vel farið. Hann er mikill af sjálfum sér og manna fræknastur."

Jorund the Goði *no advice  you need from us, you know about this - that is you fight with Hrut you may lose /forfeit both life and wealth. Because he is well made (fit). He is great by gis own deeds (? known) and a most brave man

Þá kvað Mörður það upp að hann mundi eigi berjast við Hrút. Þá varð óp mikið
að Lögbergi og óhljóð og hafði Mörður af hina mestu svívirðu.

Morð then announced that it was not his idea to fight with Hrut. Then was much noise/shouting at the LawRock and - (CV) violent singing / (Hooting) and Morð was most in disgrace

Síðan ríða menn heim af þingi.

Afterwards men ride home from the Thing

Þeir bræður riðu vestur til Reykjardals, Höskuldur og Hrútur, og gistu að
Lundi. Þar bjó Þjóstólfur sonur Bjarnar gullbera.

Those Brothers rode west to Reykjar Dale, Hoskuld and Hrut and spent the night at Lund, where Thjostolf the son of Bjarni Gold-Bearer lived

Regn hafði verið mikið um daginn og höfðu menn orðið votir og voru gervir langeldar. Þjóstólfur bóndi
sat á meðal þeirra Höskulds og Hrúts. Sveinar tveir léku á gólfinu. Þeir
voru veislusveinar Þjóstólfs og lék mær ein hjá þeim. Þeir voru málgir mjög
því að þeir voru óvitrir

Rain had fallen heavily  during the day and people were wet - - and the long fires were lit/made-up and Thjostolf the Yeoman (G)  sat between Hoskuld and Hrut. Two Boys were playing on the floor - they were children supported(Z) by Thjostolf, and a Girl played there with them. They were talking much and they    Knew no better.  ( or were unknowing)

those long fires I suppose were the long fire-pits that ran down the centre of the great hall

Annar þeirra mælti: "Eg skal þér Mörður vera og stefna þér af konunni og
finna það til foráttu að þú hafir eigi sorðið hana."

One of them said "I shall be Morð and make you give up your wife and find a forfeit for not having sex with her ( this was so translated in the Sagas of the Icelanders and I suppose it to be correct)

Annar svaraði: "Eg skal þér Hrútur vera. Tel eg þig af allri fjárheimtunni
ef þú þorir eigi að berjast við mig."

The other said "I shall be Hrut I wish you to forfeit all property if you don't dare to fight with me

Þetta mæltu þeir nokkurum sinnum. Þá gerðist hlátur mikill af heimamönnum.
Þá reiddist Höskuldur og laust sveininn með sprota, þann er Mörður nefndist,
en sprotinn kom í andlitið og sprakk fyrir.

This they said a few more times, This made much laughter around the Household (Sagas of the Icelanders) Then  Hoskuld became angry and struck the lad  who called himself Morð, with a stick and the stick hit (his )face and broke the skin

Höskuldur mælti við sveininn: "Verð úti og drag engan spott að oss."

Hoskuld said to the boys "play outside and do not scoff (Z) at us  (choice of words (Z))

Hrútur mælti: "Gakk hingað til mín."

Hrut said "come (over) here to me"

Sveinninn gerði svo. Hrútur dró fingurgull af hendi sér og gaf honum og
mælti: "Far í braut og leita á engan mann síðan."
The Lad did so, Hrut drew a gold finger-ring off his hand and said "Go away and offend no one (ever) again"

Sveinninn fór í braut og mælti: "Þínum drengskap skal eg við bregða æ
síðan."

The boy went away and said" Your nobility, (New O/N) I shall praise/laud (CV) always here after"

Af þessu fékk Hrútur gott orð. Síðan fóru þeir vestur heim og er nú lokið
þrætum þeirra Marðar.

For this Hrut got good word (i.e. praise)  and afterwards they went home amd here ends the argument (G) between them and Morð
