Chapter twp
There was a time that these two brothers rode to the Althing, Hoskuld and Hrut.
A great many people were there
Þá ræddi Höskuldur við Hrút: "Það vildi (past)eg bróðir að þú bættir (past) ráð þitt og
bæðir (subj
of biðja – to ask/seek in marriage ) þér konu."
Then said
Hoskuld to Hrut, "I wish brother that you have better standing/status by
getting a wife
Hrútur svarar: "Lengi hefir mér það í hug verið og hefir mér þó tvennt um
sýnst. En nú vil eg gera að þínu
skapi eða hvar skulum við á leita
(look)?"
Hrut
answers "Long have I considered and been of two minds (?) but I will do your will - where should we try/ask
Höskuldur svaraði (past):
"Hér (here) eru
þína hönd (my version is somewhat
different to yours). Kona heitir
vilt"
Hostkuld replies " There are many Chieftains at (the) Thing and good choices but I have found one for your hand,
A Woman called
Unn and the daughter of Mord Fiddle (Gigja can also be harp) a very wise man
amd he is here at (the) Thing and also his daughter, and you can see
her if you wish
The next day
when Men were at the Law Council they saw some women - well-dressed outside
the Rangarvellir Booth
Þá mælti Höskuldur við Hrút: "Þar er hún nú Unnur er eg sagði þér frá eða
hversu líst þér á hana?"
Then said
Hroskuld to Hrut "There she is now, Unn, that I spoke of to you, what do you think of her"
"Vel," sagði hann, "en eigi veit eg hvort við eigum
heill saman."
Well (i.e.
well enough) "but I do not know if we will be well together"
Afterwards they went to the Law Council - Mord Fiddle spoke of/discussed Legal matters as his custom/as usual, and afterwards went to his booth.
Hoskuld and Grut got up and went to Morð's booth and stepped inside. Morð was seated within (i.e. further inside - probably in a place of honour)
They greeted
him, He rose to receive then and took the hand of Hokuld and set him next to
him and Hrut next to Hoskuld.
Síðan töluðu þeir margt og komu þar niður ræður Höskulds að "eg mæli til
kaupa við þig. Vill Hrútur gerast
mágur þinn og kaupa (buy) dóttur
þína og skal eg
eigi mitt til spara."
After they had discussed many things Hoskuld got round to asking " I want an agreement with you - Hrut wishes to be your son-in-law (Gordon) and to marry your daughter and I shall not be mean/stingy with this"
Morð replies "I know you are a Great/Powerful Chieftain but of your brother I do not know"
I can scarcely resist sometimes translating the words into our modern idiom I am trying to avoid this but it happens
What I like about this story so far it deals with the day - to - day minutiae of life at the time
