You are right and moreover,as I looked up the word grjót, I found
that "brjóta grjót" is same as "grýta" (in the Bible whores
where "grýttar" stoned to death).
You can brake stones out of a road. Here the say break up so from
the "Mel" -ground I visualize "grjót" coming up as pebbles.

Sorry but I'm not expert in stoning to death. The author gives the
reader clearly great space for vision.
