Hi
I see that Zöega also translates 'farand-kona' as 'beggar-woman' but
obviously not every woman who was travelling about in those days was
begging for food :)
Here is how I would translate these lines:
Frá honum er þat sagt at
About him (it) is that said that
hann gaf einni farandi konu
he gave a certain travelling woman
at launum skemmtunar sinnar
as reward for the "entertaining" of him
eitt plógsland í ríki sínu
a certain plot of arable land within his realm,
þat er fjórir öxn drægi upp dag ok nótt.
(equal to) that which four oxen (would) draw (dig/plough) up (within) a
dag and a night.

Hi there,
the solo wandering woman (as wandering poet:Bard) is certainly one of
the entertainment industry.
Entertainment is "skemmtun" action of entertaining [skemmta]
"Skemma" is like "skemma drottingar" queen's bower.
Skemma verb to host or to destroy.
Today the grownups skemmta sér(them selfs) every weekend.
What kind of fun is that?
My son "skemmtir sér" in cinema or that is his fun.
"Skemma" is relateded to "skammt" that is short or portion.
I think if you shorten something long we could talk about destroy
"skemma" the length same time you house/host it.
"Laun" are reward her for her personal entertainment.
We on the other hand name it "Laun" when something shall [go] take
place secretly [fara leynt.
It is in likeness of "Skemmt" or "skemmtilegt" to ponder in these
areas. A worm eaten apple some say "skemmt" many are "skemmd."
The author of the text, obviously is aware of his fellows ponderings.
I wonder why? What kind of personal entertainment is the dearest
one ?
Things like this are most often essential for the reader's
entertainment. Do you really thing you can take Victorian
dictionaries, Victorian Polyglots, Victorian translators, ...
adultly ?
Hope this clarifies something
