Hi there Alan,

"Að bregðast við" means to react to
But "bregast somebody" means to let him down.

Here the vast majority of my country men to day take "Bragð" of
Eyvindur to be Eyvind's reaction
or Eyvind's move (like a turn in a game).
It was brought up by the public, who decided that fewer (rather than
more) of Eyvind's status
would have reacted in same manner, is conclusion easily driven .

Your initially conclusions were awoken from the context, but they
are not stated.

As it is not mentioned (getið) in the text that the boy was Eyvind's
nephew or cousin,
one can conclude the boy is far related to Eyvind.

Non-interfering is exact.

Thanks Uoden

sudden change in his fortunes, his great advances in
accomplishments, his newfound boldness...albeit that it really was
seven winters in the making. But I see other published translations
consider it to be specifically his kind act or deed towards his
destitute kinsman now servant. In terms of the placement of the
sentence in the text this may be more appropriate, but neither my ON
dictionary or MnI dictionary give this particular meaning.)

‘fár’ but I can´t see why this form would be used, instead of
simply ‘fár’
