I thought about that too and supposed that Skjöldur is a verb = to shield/protect, but I certainly am sure of Skjalda is the Item - a shield because it occurs to the best of my knowledge and belief in the word
Skjald-mær    shield maid one of these Amazon types hope this helps

thankyou for your reply. The information is much appreciated.

Can I ask what is Brögð?

Also, why is there the different spelling of shield - skjöldur and Skjalda?

May I ask why you have the understanding that Vél means the brain? This means different definitions to Zoega.

beita vélum skjalda - would this make sense?

Regards.

This is a tough task.

But SkjaldaSpillir or SpillirSkjalda refers to it that spoils
shields.

Uoden

beita [use] VélaBrögð [Véla's tricks] means as I understand it to
manipulate or deceive one's mind. I have very strong feeling that
the Vél is the brain. Véla like to hypnotize, captivate

never thought of it in that sense.

being deceptive to an opponent is should be structured as "[insert
weapon]" "véla" to be more specific if it was a weapon that decieved
shields it would be structured "[insert
weapon]" "véla" "skjöldur" ????
