þeir koma í nætrelding í Jökulsdal, fara yfir brú á ánni, ok var 545
þetta þann morgin, er féránsdóm átti at heyja.

Then they rode along the same way till they come at dawn to Jokulsdal.crossing over the bridge

of the river, and it was the morning the Court of Confiscation was to take place (?subj)

 

Þá spyrr Þorgeirr, hversu mætti helzt á óvart koma.

Then asked Thorgeirr how they might best (?overcome/get round?)

 

Sámr kvazk mundu kunna ráð til þess. Hann snýr þegar af leiðinni ok upp á
múlann ok svá eptir hálsinum milli Hrafnkelsdals ok Jökulsdals,
Sam declared he knew a way to this, and he turned off their track and up onto the mountainside

(from múli = a ridge) and to a crest that stands between Hrafnkel's Dale and Jokul Dale

There went some grassy gullies up to the Heath, but a (steep?) slope to the dale,

and stood there the Farm down below

There Sam dismounts and says " let free the horses and leave twenty men to guard (them)

and take 60 men to rush down (?upon) the farm I imagine few men will be on foot (Up and about)

skjótt at bœnum. Váru þá liðin rismál. Eigi var fólk upp

They did so, and this was afterwards called "HorseGullies" they were in that valley at

rising time and few folk were up

They rammed a log into the door and rushed in. Hrafnkell was in his bed. They took him

 thence (Gordon) and all his men of the household (?house-carles) who could bear Weapons/arms

Women and Children were in another house/building

var skotit váðási einum. Þeir leiða Hrafnkel þar til ok hans
menn.

In the meadows stood a storeroom/outbuilding from here to the wall of the Hall was a beam where

clothes were hung (to dry) they took Hrafnkell and all his men (to this place ?)

 

Hann bauð mörg boð fyrir sik ok sína menn. En er
þat tjáði eigi, þá bað hann mönnum sínum lífs, --

He made many pleas for himself and his men (but that was ignored ??)

he (made a ) plea for his men's lives

 

því at þeir
565 hafa ekki til sakar gört við yðr, en þat er mér engi ósœmð, þótt
þér drepið mik.

They have done you no harm it is no disgrace to take my life

 

Mun ek ekki undan því mælask. Undan
hrakningum mælumk ek. Er yðr engi sœmð í því.'

I make no protest (i.e. about the loss of his life) BUT against this wretchedness,
there is no honour for you in (all) this     ( got lost there - I think)
 
Þorkell mælti: 'Þat höfum vér heyrt, at þú hafir lítt verit
leiðitamr þínum óvinum, ok er vel nú, at þú kennir þess í dag
570 á þér.'
Thorgeirr speaks "We have heard you have gone deaf  to the pleas of your enemies
and it is well for you to get the same today"
