Subject: [norse_course] Hrafnkell 504
There were a couple of wo rds I couldn't find definitions for and then a
couple of places I couldn't make much sense of at all.
Grace
Hrafnkell gengr (present) þegar til búðar ok lætr taka hesta (plural) sína ok
Hrafnkell went at once to (the) booth and had his horse caught and
505 ríðr á brott af þingi ok unði (una, enjoy) illa (enjoys badly = is ill-pleased) við sínar málalykðir, því at hann
rides away from (the) Thing and (is?) astonished (at how) badly (it went?)
with his lawsuit's conclusion because he
átti aldri fyrr slíkar. Ríðr hann þá austr Lyngdalsheiði ok svá
had never such (an outcome? [yes]) before. He rides then east (over?) [to] Lyngsdale
Heath and thus
austr á Síðu, ok eigi léttir hann fyrr en heima í Hrafnkelsdal
east to S., and he did not let up until (he was) at home in Hrafnkel's
valley
ok sezk á Aðalból ok lét sem ekki hefði í orðit. (nothing had happened, pp of verða)
and set down in A. and behaved as if (he) had nothing to say(?).
En Sámr var á þingi ok gekk mjök uppstertr.
But Sam was at (the) Thing and went (about) very elated.
510 Mörgum mönnum þykkir vel, þó at þann veg hafi at borizk,
To many men it seemed good, because (for it) to have happened thus
at Hrafnkell hafi hneykju farit (received, suffered, see Gordon: fara(7)) ok minnask nú, at hann hefir
that Hrafnkell has done shame(ful things?) and calls to mind now, that
mörgum ójafnað sýnt.
(he) has shown injustice to many.
Sámr bíðr til þess, at slitit er þinginu. (Note dative case og þinginu) Búask (present) menn þá heim.
Sam waited until this, that (the) Thing is dissolved. Men prepared then (to
go) home .
Þakkar hann þeim broðrum sína (I´m not sure if this pronoun refers to Sám or the brothers) liðveizlu, en Þorgeirr spurði
He thanks them, the brothers for their support, but Þorgeirr asked
515 Sám hlæjandi, hversu honum þotti at fara. Hann lét vel yfir
Sam laughing, how to him it seemed to go. He (Sam?) expressed approval
about it (Zoega).
því.
Þorgeirr mælti: 'Þykkisk þú nú nökkuru nær en áðr?'
Þorgeirr spoke, "Do you think now anywhere near (better off?) than before?"
Sámr mælti: 'Beðit (suffered, see Gordon: bíða) þykki mér Hrafnkell hafa sneypu, er
Sam spoke, "? Seems to me Hrafnkell has disgrace, which
lengi mun uppi vera, þessi hans sneypa, (nominative) ok er þetta við (vera við – equal to) mikla
will be remembered for a long time, of this his disgrace, which with great
520 fémuni.'
value??"
'Eigi er maðrinn alsekr, meðan (while) eigi er háðr féránsdómr, ok
The man is not (declared) full outlaw, meanwhile neither is the court of
confiscation held, and
hlýtr (hljóta – is obliged to, must) þat at hans heimili at gera . Þat skal vera fjórtán nóttum
( I couldn't get this bit at all). It shall be fourteen nights after taking
up weapons at the end of the assembly (Gordon).
eptir vápnatak."
En þat heitir vápnatak er alþýða ríðr af þingi.
But it is called taking up of weapons when all the people ride from (the)
Thing.
