picked up while visiting Jorvik a few years ago. Unfortunately,
it's in a box somewhere, like most of my possessions I haven't
gotten around to unpacking since finishing graduate school. I'll
have to go on a dig.

It´s years since I was last there too. I hear they´ve changed the
Jorvik Centre lately and got rid of Magnus Magnusson´s commentary
and made the whole thing a lot more smelly!, so I don´t even know if
they still have Norse speaking. The book´s great fun though.
There´s a parallel English translation and an explanation of
background and sources, e.g. sayings from Hávamál, riddles from
Hervarar saga, but also a couple of original verses. Do you
remember the bit where the car goes between two children, a boy
(Slengr) and a girl (Hildr) shouting to each other across the road?

"The girl is chasing the little boy who has snatched food from the
house where Gunnvör, his grandmother, is baking. Having picked up
the anti-Eiríkr feeling in the household he is indescretely
repeating a taunting referrence to the diminution of Eiríkr´s power,
and also addressing the girl rudely as 'kerling' which literally
means "old woman" but is more likely to be used contemptuously."

Slengr: Eiríkr Blóðøx ræðr, já.
Hildr: Þegi þú Slengr; þegi þú, þegi þú, þegi þú.
Slengr: Hildr, Hildr, kerling Hildr; kerling, kerling.
Hildr: Gráðugr halr etr sér aldrtega.
Slengr: Þat mælti mín móðir at ek sé víkingsefni.
Hildr: Slengr, fóstri, kom þú heim. Slengr; Slengr.
Slengr: Jórvíkingar ráða, já.

Slengr: Eirik Bloodaxe rules OK!
Hildr: Shut up, Slengr; shut up, shut up, shut up.
Slengr: Hildr, Hildr, old woman Hildr!
Hildr: Greedy children eat themselves sick [Actually "a greedy man",
see Hávamál].
Slengr: Mum says I'm a real Viking! [Or "I've got the makings of a
viking].
Hildr: Slengr, Slengr, please come home.
Slengr: Jorvik Vikings rule OK!
