My understanding is that modern Icelanders want to try to keep the language pure
and avoid loan words from English and other languages. Somebody correct me if
I've gotten this wrong, but rather than some phonetic version of "telefone",
they prefer to come up with a compound word in Icelandic that would translate as
"far-talker" or some such.
As far as finding equivalents in Icelandic for common English words, I don't see
what that would be a problem.
