Thanks for pointing that out.

 

Users of my grammar notes please note: 'þessu' in 422 and 423 is the dative neuter singular, not genitive 'þessa' as my grammar notes incorrectly recorded, you should have added. I think I must have seen what I expected the text to be rather than what was actually there.

 

Also, for others who may refer to my grammar notes, please note that they are simply my own inexpert notes, not an authoritive guide and I would appreciate any feedback on any other cases where my notes are wrong.

'þessu' in 422 and 423 is the dative neuter singular, not

genitive 'þessa' as I would have expected, and as the dictionaries and

grammars would suggest.  Normally it's genitive for the person or

thing being avenged and dative for the reciptient the vengeance (with

or without the preposition).  Besides the regular usages, Gordon just

mentions these two instances in Hrafnels saga "with dative" in the

glossary.  There is no comment in the notes.  I wonder if this happens

anywhere else.
