Great Hearing from someone new, I have had no
feedback for a great long while, not even to the query I sent out, asking if the
Norse Course was starting or finished or what , well it now appears to be
working.
sigr n. m. is a victory
sigra v. means to vanquish - overcome
sigrari n.m. Victor
Taken from my copy or Zoega hope it is of
use

Subject: [norse_course] Hey
everybody...and I have Question.
Hi everyone. I'm not sure if you all require an intro post,
but hey,
this is the proper way to go, so. I just want to say hi to
everyone,
and thank you for having me in this group.
My first
question so far is that i've been doing some research on
the net trying to
find a translation to the word or action "To
Overcome" (as in to prevail,
and to win over. Not, to be overcome by
sleep, or to lose to something or
someone) in Old Norse.
So far, as you can see, i've failed to come up
with a proper
translation. Some of the answers that i came up with was all
different. One would say one thing, and the next place would say
something else, so i'm not sure what it is. Also, from my
understanding Icelandic is the closest to the Old Norse, and Old
Icelandic is the Old Norse?
I've gotten "yfirstíga" in Modern
Icelandic for Overcome. I've also
gotten "yfirstígari" as Conqueror in Old
Icelandic, so i'm just
deducing that "yfirstíga" is Conquer/Overcome/Win
in Old Icelandic
as well.
Can someone please confirm? and if it is
wrong, can someone please
let me know what the Correct Translation of "To
Overcome" is in Old
West Nordic?
Thank you all so much in
advance.
Sincerely,
Paul
