Saell Alanthis is really interesting now that you have pointed it out ná is there (náir, náða, nát) in Zöega,it clearly gives (3) náðu + infin, - to be able , to be allowed [pret ind of ná = were allowed, able ]I do not see this in Gordon, he just gives ná and I cannot change my font color back to black, I hope it does not cause more confusionEverything else is good and I thank you Alan, and I have a modern Icelandic Dictionary aand will be using it more often, for the interest of comparing how language develops, I have a passion (grande- really) for linguistics.I shall not give up, I want so much to achieve this, and am trying to learn to relax and study, this is what I've been advised to do, but it matters a trifle too much to me to succeed at this, and I feel driven (by myself of course) to make it, this causes an awful lot of tension and I think more error.KveðjaPatriciaFrom: AThompsonSent: Monday, June 06, 2005 9:45 AMSubject: RE: [norse_course] Auðun section 23/feedback PatriciaSæl Patricia

En nú hefi ek þann fundit;
But/and now I have him(acc) [literally: that one] found
But now I have found him
því at þú áttir kost at taka hvárttveggja frá mér, dýrit ok svá líf mitt,
this[því at = because, ie for that (reason) that] you had opportunuity to take both [from me] the beast (bear) and so [also] my lifeyou could have taken everything from me, the bear and my life
en þú lézt mik fara þangat í friði, sem aðrir náðu eigi.'
and you/thou let me travel thither freely/in peace. as others (naðu) [pret ind of ná = were allowed, able] not
but you let me travel in peace to where others (? could) not go
Konungr tók við gjöfinni með blíðu, ok gaf Auðuni í móti góðar gjafir, áðr en þeir skildisk.
King took to [ie accepted] gift+the with joy/friendship and gave Aiðun (many) [í móti = in return] good gifts first when [áðr en = before] they parted (sk-reflex)
The King took the gift with friendliness, and gave Auðun some/many (?) fine gifts when the parted
Auðun varði fénu til Íslands ferðar ok fór út þegar um sumarit til Íslands ok þótti vera inn mesti gæfumaðr.
Auðun set aside/ ?guarded [I think it has the sense of laid out, outlaid, expended, see Zöega verja (4)] money for to Icelands journey and travelled out at once in summer+the to Iceland and was thought to be the most fortunate man.
Auðun put aside money for his journey to Iceland and travelled at once in Summertime to Iceland and was said to be a most fortunate man
this Naðu - Alan, it seemed in the books to relate to the word snake or adder, and that seemed daft so I left it, I could not find anything more appropriate, in the Barnes Books which I prefer, I could not find móti and í friði I actually thought of more as - in freedom for Varði I really preferred "set aside" it related to the man's method and honesty [further to my comment above my Modern Icelandic dictionary indicates that the expression still exists: verja peningum sínum til e-s, spend/use ones money on something]
[You asked in a previous post, why I used a Modern Icelandic dictionary to help me with Old Icelandic for similar reasons that I might use a Modern English dictionary to look up a word in Shakespeare. Because the meanings of words can change over time, it will not always be 100% right but it can provide a strong clue to a word or phrases meaning]
