1) Ah yes, your suggestion seems more reasonable re. hætt.
2) If 'hafir' is an anamalous use of the subjunctive, Gordon doesn't
mention it--but then there's a lot of things Gordon doesn't
mention... But maybe it sounded natural to the author?
