Tolkien had a profound knowledge of the Andglo-Saxon world and often used the Saxon Runes to writes sections of his works (i.e- the map in The Hobbit) or he used the Cirth, which is an alphabet of Elvish runes used by the dwarves to write with. The Cirth are Tolkien's "Saxon Rune-based" runic alphabet.
