I recall reading (I think) that the 24-rune FUThARK
was discontinued shortly before 800 AD. The reason
for introducing the 16-rune FUThARK was an estetic
one it seems. The idea was that all letters should have
exactly one stave. Presumably the 16-FUThARK looked
neater on monuments.

P.S. the changover from "URNORDIC" to "OLD NORDIC"
is called the Syncopic Period, because the words
were shortened then. Why don't you ask some questions about
the Rök Stone? Its date, its language and what Futhark was
used?
