Glad I´m not the only one slow off the mark this month. Anyway, here
are my efforts...
Einarr kvað sér eigi mundu svá meingefit at ríða þeim hesti,
Einar said he would not be so malicious as to ride the
horse
er honum var bannat, ef þó væri mõrg
õnnur til.
which was forbidden him, whilst there were many others
available.
Einarr ferr nú heim eptir klæðum sínum ok flytr heim á Aðalból.
Now Einar went home for his clothes and moved in to The
Manor.
Síðan var frt (foert) í sel fram í Hrafnkelsdal,
Then it was time to up to the shieling in
Hrafnkelsdale,
þar sem heitir á Grjótteigsseli.
which is called Grjotteigs shieling.
Einari ferr allvel at um sumarit,
All went well for Einar over the summer,
svá at aldri verðr sauðvant fram allt til miðsumars,
to the extent that, up until midsummer, no ewes went
missing,
en þá var vant nær þremr tigum ásauðar eina nótt.
but then nearly 30 ewes went missing in one
night.
Leitar Einarr um alla haga ok finnr eigi.
Einar searched all the pasture lands and did not find
them.
Honum var vant nær viku.
They were missing for nearly a week.
Þat var einn morgin, at Einarr gekk út snimma,
It was early one morning that Einar went
out
ok er þá létt af allri sunnanþokunni ok úrinu.
when the mist and drizzle had cleared up from the
south.
Hann tekr staf í hõnd sér, beizl ok
þófa.
He took with him his staff, bridle and
saddle-cloth.
Gengr hann þá fram yfir ána Grjótteigsá.
Then he went on over the river Grjotteig
Hon fell fyrir framan selit.
which runs past the shieling.
En þar á eyrunum lá fé þat, er heima hafði verit um kveldit.
And there on the gravel banks lay the sheep which had
been in the shieling the evening before.
Hann støkkði því heim at selinu,
He drove them home to the shieling,
en ferr at leita hins, er vant var áðr.
and went in search of the ones which were missing
earlier.
Hann sér nú stóðhrossin fram á eyrunum
Then he sees the horses down on the gravel
banks
ok hugsar at hõndla sér hross nõkkurt til reiðar ok þóttisk vita,
and decides to catch one of them to ride as he reckons
at hann mundi fljótara yfir bera, ef hann riði heldr en gengi.
that he would cover the area more quickly if he rode
than if he walked.
Ok er hann kom til hrossanna, þá elti hann þau,
And when he came up to the horses, he chased
them
ok váru þau nú skjõrr, er aldri váru võn at ganga undan manni,
and they became shy for they were not used to being
ridden,
nema Freyfaxi einn.
except for Freyfaxi.
Hann var svá kyrr sem hann væri grafinn niðr.
He was as still as if he were rooted to the
spot.
Einarr veit, at líðr morgunninn, ok hyggr,
Einar knows that morning is coming and
thinks
at Hrafnkell mundi eigi vita, þótt hann riði hestinum.
that Hrafnkell need not know that he has ridden the
horse.
Nú tekr hann hestinn ok slær við beizli,
So he takes hold of the horse and puts on the
bridle,
lætr þófa á bak hestinum undir sik ok ríðr upp hjá Grjótárgili,
lays the saddle-cloth across the horse´s back and rides
up the Grjota ravine
svá upp til jõkla ok vestr með jõklunum,
right up to the glacier and west along the glacier
edge,
þar sem Jõkulsá fellr undir þeim,
where the Jokuls river flowed,
svá ofan með ánni til Reykjasels.
and so from there he followed the river to the Reykja
shieling.
I presume these last three lines are all governed
by the main verb "ríðr" in the line before? Or have I missed
something?!
