Subject: Hrafnkel 101-125

--------------------------------------------------------
Einarr kvað sér eigi mundu svá meingefit at ríða þeim hesti,
E. said he himself would not be so evil intentioned as to ride the stallion,

that was forbidden to him, if he were to (see) another day (?)

Einarr ferr nú heim eptir klæðum sínum ok flytr heim á Aðalból.
E. now went home after his clothing and unloaded (his things)? at the Manor.

Síðan var fort (foert) í sel fram í Hrafnkelsdal,
Thence (he) was gone to the shieling to the upper part of H.

þar sem heitir á Grjótteigsseli.
there as is called Stone __ sheiling.

Einari ferr allvel at um sumarit,
E. behaved very well through the summer,

svá at aldri verðr sauðvant fram allt til miðsumars,
so that no sheep were missing up to midsummer,

but then one night nearly thirty ewes went missing.

Leitar Einarr um alla haga ok finnr eigi.
E. searched all over the pastures and found none.

Honum var vant nær viku.
Literally: To him was missing nearly a week.
(Does this mean he looked for the sheep for a week, A week’s time was
lost to him from searching? Or the sheep were missing for a week?)

Þat var einn morgin, at Einarr gekk út snimma,
It happened one morning that E. went out early

when it? (the wind?) took off all the mist from the south and drizzle.

Hann tekr staf í hõnd sér, beizl ok þófa.
He took a staff (?) in his hand, bridle and saddle pad.

Gengr hann þá fram yfir ána Grjótteigsá.
Then he went on over the Stone ___stream.

Hon fell fyrir framan selit.
It fell in front of the shieling.

But there on the banks lay the animals that had been home the night before.

Hann støkkði því heim at selinu,
He drove them home to the shieling,

But set to work to search for those that were missing before.

Hann sér nú stóðhrossin fram á eyrunum
He saw now the stallion on the bank

ok hugsar at hõndla sér hross nõkkurt til reiðar ok þóttisk vita,
and thought about catching himself a certain horse to ride and knew?

at hann mundi fljótara yfir bera, ef hann riði heldr en gengi.
that he would cover ground more swiftly if he rode rather than walked.

and when he came to the horses, then he chased them,

ok váru þau nú skjõrr, er aldri váru võn at ganga undan manni,
and they were now spooky, there was little hope of getting them under
saddle,(or the horses weren’t used to having people near them?)

nema Freyfaxi einn.
except for the F.

Hann var svá kyrr sem hann væri grafinn niðr.
He was as quiet as if he were rooted to the ground.

Einarr veit, at líðr morgunninn, ok hyggr,
E. knew that to go???? the following day, and intended,

at Hrafnkell mundi eigi vita, þótt hann riði hestinum.
that H. must not know that he rode the stallion.

Nú tekr hann hestinn ok slær við beizli,
Now he took the stallion and bridled it,

lætr þófa á bak hestinum undir sik ok ríðr upp hjá Grjótárgili,
put the saddle pad on the back of the horse under him and rode up close
by G.

svá upp til jõkla ok vestr með jõklunum,
so up to the glaciers and west along the glaciers,

þar sem Jõkulsá fellr undir þeim,
there where glacierstream flows under them,

svá ofan með ánni til Reykjasels.
so down along one (?) to R.
