Jarrod
From what little I've read of it, there's plenty of
alliteration in Old Norse. If you have Gordon's book on Old Norse, you'll find
these opening lines on page 136:
Vreið vas þá
Ving-Ðorr es
vaknaði
ok síns
hamars
of saknaði
'Wrath was Thor who swings the
hammer
he is awake
and his
hammer
he feels the loss of
The alliteration here is on the 'v' sounds in the
first line and on the 's' sounds in the second.
Repetition also comes into this poem later on
when the giant Thrym says:
'Hvat's með
Ásum hvat's með álfum?'
'What's with the
Aesir What's with the
elves?'
And Loki replies
'Ilt's með
Ásum
ilt's með álfum'
'It is ill with the
Aesir it is ill with the
elves'
Cheers
