Bơðvarr leyndisk í brott um nóttina;
BQðvarr - conceals himself - away - during - the night
Bothvar steals aways during the night;
hann lætr Hơttr fara með sér, ok gørir hann þat nauðugr ok kallaði hann sér stýrt til bana.
he - makes - HQttr - go - with - himself, and/but - does - he - that - unwilling - and - cries out - he - it/him? - would drive - to - death
he forces Hood to go along with him, but he (Hood) does that unwillingly and cries out that he is being driven to his death.
Bơðvarr segir at betr mundi til takask.
BQðvarr - says - that - better - will - to - turn out
Bothvar said it would turn out better (than that.)
Þeir ganga í brott frá hơllinni, ok verðr Bơðvarr at bera hann, svá er hann hræddr.
They - go - away - from - the hall, and - is obliged - BQðvarr - to - carry - him, so much - is he - afraid
They went away from the hall, and Bothvar had to carry him, so frightened was he.
Nú sjá þeir dýrit, ok því næst oepir Hơttr slíkt sem hann má ok kvað dýrit mundu gleypa hann.
Now - see - they - the beast, and - thereupon - cries out - HQttr - such - that - he could - and - declares - the beast - will - swallow - him
Now they saw the beast, and at that Hood cried out as loud as he could and declared that the beast would swallow him.
Bơðvarr bað bikkjuna hans þegja ok kastar honum niðr í mosann, ok þar liggr hann ok eigi með ơllu óhræddr.
BQðvarr - bade - the dog/bitch - of him - to be silent - and - threw - him - down - to - the moss, and - there - lay - he - and - not - with - all - unafraid
Bothvar bade him (dog that he was) to be quiet and threw him down into the moss, and there he lay by no means unafraid.
Eigi þorir hann heim at fara heldr.
Not - dares - he - home - to - go - any the more
Neither did he dare to go home.
Nú gengr Bơðvarr móti dýrinu; þat hoefir honum, at sverðit er fast í umgjơrðinni, er hann vildi bregða því.
Now - goes - BQðvarr - towards - the beast; it - befalls - to him, that - the sword - is - fast - in - the scabbard, when - he - wishes - to draw - that
Now Bothvar went towards the beast; as fate would have it, the sword was stuck fast in the scabbard, when he wished to draw it out.
Bơðvarr eggjar nú fast sverðit ok þá bragðar í umgjơrðinni,
BQðvarr - urges - now - strongly - the sword - and - then - stirring - in - the scabbard
Bothvar now strongly worked the sword and then it moved within the scabbard,
ok nú fær hann brugðit umgjơrðinni svá at sverðit gengr ór slíðrunum,
and - now - is able - he - to move - the scabbard - so - that - the sword - goes - out of - the sheath
and now he was able to dislodge the scabbard so that the sword came out of the sheath,
ok leggr þegar undir boegi dýrsins ok svá fast at stóð í hjartanu,
and - thrusts - at once - under - shoulder - of the beast - and - so - strongly - that - sticks in - to - the heart
and thrust at once under the shoulder of the beast and so strongly that it pierced into the heart,
ok datt þá dýrit til jarðar dautt niðr.
and - drops - then - the beast - to - earth - dead - down
and then the beast dropped down dead to the ground.
Eptir þat ferr hann þangat sem Hơttr liggr.
After - that - goes - he - thither - where - HQttr - lies
After that he went over to where Hood was lying.
Bơðvarr tekr hann upp ok berr þangat sem dýrit liggr dautt.
BQðvarr - picks - him - up - and - carries - thither - where - the beast - lies - dead
Bothvar picked him up and carried him to where the beast lay dead.
Hơttr skelfr ákaft.
HQttr - trembles - greatly
Hood was trembling greatly.
Bơðvarr mælti: ‘Nú skaltu drekka blóð dðyrsins.’
BQðvarr - says: now - shall you - drink - blood - of the beast
Bothvar said: "Now you shall drink the creature's blood."
