Hello !
I am new to learning the Old Norse language but have studied
Old English, German, Dutch, and some Old Middle English
sporadically.
My question is this ... Is there a definable point when the
'sk' or 'sc' shifted to have the sound of 'sh'? For example: 'scip' in OE
is pronounced 'SHip' in ME. Yet, The Old Saxon and Old Norse still pronounce the
forms with the hard K. Would this mutation have occurred in England
as the various tribes conversed with differing dialects? Or could it have
happened before the migration? I would assume the former, as the mutation is not
heavily prevalent on the continent.
Any input is welcomed !!!
