Here are some generally used Icelandic terms.

The American Revolution = (bandaríska) frelsistríðið (= the war for freedom)
American Civil War / War of Secession = þrælastríðið (= the slave war)
U.S.A. = Bandaríki Norður-Ameríku
C.S.A. = Suðurríkjasambandið (or, by analogy: Sambandsríki Norður-Ameríku)

I don't know. We use 'samband' now. That's an old word but 'confederacy'
is probably
a modern-ish meaning for it. Another (modern?) term is 'bandalag'. There
is Bandamanna
saga = The Story of the Allies.
