Agreed. The color blue is also used in old-norse to describe corpses and
frozen mummies. Both of which are much closer to what I would call black.

ON "Rauð" could mean any color from yellow to magenta, depending on the
source. Gold is often referred to as both "red" and "white" (as is the sun).
Conversely, anything from red to yellow to white could be called "gullr" or
"golden". This is more clear when one sees pure mined 24 karat gold. It's
actual color has a rather sickening reddish hue to it that goes away to
become more yellow when silver is added (to get lower karat vales). And
obviously all metals are reflective, so white is also a reasonable
description.

Freyja's hair is said to be "Red-Gold" which may mean anything from a
platinum-blonde through golden-tresses all the way to carrot-top. I'm sure
that a native speaker, or one more closely descended from that culture,
might consider the terms more descriptive than I do, but the translations to
english aren't made by artists who consider the subject the way I might.

(e.g., The deepest part of the sky today is a nice cobalt blue, or possibly
a clean Reflex blue uncoated, or maybe closer to PMS-286 when coated. The
iridescence is vibrating to slowly to tell exactly which.)
