Incidentally, what is considered the main evidence for early Finnic avoidance of *-o- in non-initial syllables?
Most
of the IE branches that have uncontroversially contributed words to
Uralic are also branches in which short *o generally shifted to *a -- Slavic is
the only exception that comes to mind right now.
Avoidance of -o-
(and not -a-) in second syllables (irrespective of the first syllable's content) seems a somewhat
abstract rule to have been sustained over a time period as long as
Uralic > Finnic, but perhaps that's just my inexperience speaking.
