Similarly, eq. like:
eruthrós G; rudhirá- S; rutilus (maybe) L;
make it likely that the alt. in G words w -ros but -i- in compounds comes from *-iros ( *CVCiros > *CVCros but *CVCirC- > *CVCiC- ). The V-loss is sim. to:
nearós = young/new/recent, nebrós = fawn G; [*newr ?] nor = new Ar;
stiphrós = firm/solid / stout/sturdy , stibarós = strong / stout/sturdy G; *stIblo > stáblo SC; *stIwolU > stwóL Po;
etc.
Assuming -u:na , -u:rus is analogous to -i:nus , -inus , -nus , -er , this would explain the (apparent or posited) alt. in words w -ros or -u- (and -us) < *-uros , and sim. alt. for -n-, etc. This makes the most sense if opt. r. > R ( > X > h > ? > 0), etc., as in previous posts.
