According to std etymological dictionaries, French boue 'mud' derives from Gaulish *bawa:, reconstructed by analogy with Welsh baw. This is an IE root *k'Weu- 'excrement, dirt' (traditional *gW-) found in e.g. Latin bu:bina:re 'to have one's period (a woman)'.
