I'm thinking of funk, the smell --I've seen it as from Latin fungus in various places

I can't make sense of this. Are you thinking of <Funke>
'spark'? It certainly isn't from Latin <fungus>. Or are
you thinking of English <funk> 'a strong, unpleasant smell',
from Latin <fumigare> via Old French? Or of something else
altogether?
