A sequel to my recent post entitled 'PIE * bhendh-'
PREAMBLE: IE. reconstructions are usually the result of etymological analysis and research into later attested words. But these words are based exclusively on IE data while ignoring the full range of the isogloss when it extends into non-related languages.
For the purpose of verification, I am now presenting a synonym for the previous AE 'bnT': to tie, to bind, to swaddle with bands, bandages, binding spells, and to copulate. The new term is 'nDD' which means also to tie, to bind, to weave, thread, cord, fillets, bandlets, ties, bandages and ligatures.
SOURCE: From a text dealing with the Book of the Dead, inscribed upon a coffin of Menthu-hetep, a queen from the XI th Dynasty circa B.C. 2500. A copy of the text was made by Sir J. G. Wilkinson and reported by Maspero in his Recueil, vol., ii, 62. The copy was presented to the British Museum in 1834, and is now in the Department of Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities.
