Oh, come on! PIE *dom- 'household' is a NOUN root, not a verb.

But Latin ma:teria has a long /a:/, and also your etymology won't explain the remainder of the word. Although some Indo-Europeanists (e.g. Ernout-Meillet, De Vaan) think this is derivated from ma:ter 'mother', IMHO this is a genuine (although probably not PIE-native) root *meH2t-r- with cognates in Greek, Armenian and Slavic.
