Thus, instead of wondering how this *u disappeared elsewhere it might be
more productive to think of how it could have arisen in Germanic. One
simple possibility is this: the weak stem of *(h1)wed-mon- was
*(h1)wed-m.n- > pre-Gmc. *wedumn-, hence a new strong stem, *wedumon-.
No prestidigitation needed.
