It's actually a pretty simple story. In East Baltic, _stressed_ *ai (<
*ai, *oi) and *ei fell together as *e.: (a mid-high monophthong), which
was subsequently diphthongised to /ie/ independently in Auks^taitian
Lithuanian and in Latvian.
