Pardon me, I should have included a caveat along the lines of:

The etymology of Hermes remains unclear. Beekes has suggested it derives from a Pre-Greek substrate, however, among IE origins, the following have been proposed.

(I'm unsure whether there are any other strong candidates beyond those two listed below).
