Skt. deva- comes from *deiw-o-, a rather common type of adjectival
formation, with the suffix *-o- (known as the "thematic vowel") and the
full vowel *e inserted in *diw-, the zero-grade of *djew-. Speakers of
PIE occasionally inserted the vowel in the wrong slot, hence *deiwo-
rather than *djewo-.
