The most obvious candidate is *wel- 'warm, heat' (English well 'to well up', Albanian valë 'heat, boiling', Armenian gol 'heat' (Mallory & Adams 2006, p. 348), thus suggesting a root *wel-k-. Their reconstruction of an IE root *wºlka:no-/*wºlkeH2no- 'smith god' seems to be a forced one.

The root *wel-k- also explains Basque ol(h)a 'forge, foundry' < *bol:(h)a.
