For that post I just refreshed my memory with a quick trawl
through Victor Watts, The Cambridge Dictionary of English
Place-Names, CUP, 2004. Other sources that I've used
extensively include Eilert Ekwall, The Concise Oxford
Dictionary of English Place-names, 4th edn., and A.H. Smith,
English Place-Name Elements. (2 vols.). Kenneth Cameron's
English Place-Names is a nice general survey. P.H. Reaney's
Origin of English Place-Names also isn't bad, but more
recent research has superseded some of it; the Cameron is
more up-to-date. Anything by Margaret Gelling is also worth
a look.
