That's certainly not the usage that I was taught, especially
for dates: I was taught that correct usage is 'the 1930s',
'the 30s', 'two CDs', etc. Digging around, I find several
people quoting the MLA style guide: 'Do not use an
apostrophe to form the plural of an abbreviation or a
number'.
