To me this debate seems a little wrong-headed. Sons-in-law are part of a family; and languages can be imagined which extend either “knowing” or “begetting” in a huge variety of ways. Instead, we should listen to the firm linguistic evidence that schwebeablaut does not exist, and *g’n-H is “know”, while *g’-nH is “beget”.
