Gascon definitely seems to be a language in its own right, perhaps as the most divergent of the Occitan-Catalan continuum. It even looks more Ibero-Romance than French with its /f-/ > /h-/, etc. In many ways, the whole lot of Occitan seems closer to Spanish than French --at least in the written form. How close are the spoken forms to the written?
