Yeah, I thought so too, only <y:stan> comes from *u:stjan (< *unstjan)
related to <y:st> "storm, tempest, hurricane", like OHG <unst> "storm,
gale, whirlwind". One would not expect the diphthong <i:e(st-)> from
this (except as a hypercorrection after the merger of *i:e and *y: in
West Saxon), still less <ge:(st-)> (which suggests that it is not a
hypercorrection of <*y:st-> but rather an alternate spelling of
<*i:est->, or else the actual correct form from *gæ:st- or *gaustj- or
even *jæ:st- or *jaustj-, or perhaps it actually had a short vowel (?
related to <gist> "yeast", = "foaming"?) and Bosworth-Toller is wrong).
