Whereas maternally, Icelanders are only 50% Irish. However, does
mothers' language have much influence when it is the father's language
that is the language of the community? I don't notice much
'substrate' influence within our family. I don't think the Eastern
Tukanoan example, where couples' 'mother' tongues (i.e. fathers'
tongues) are typically different, is actually relevant, as in this
case children (sons, at least) are expected to become competent in
their mother's tongue.
