It was actually *leNxU; the vowel lost its nasality in some Slavic
dialects (esp. in East Slavic Ljaxi), but cf. Lith. Lenkas and Hung.
Lengyel for Poles. *-x- is a common hypocoristic suffix in Slavic; the
full ethnonym was *leNde^ne ("Lendians"), sg. *leNde^ninU, from *leNdo
'barren land'. An alternative suffix occured in the byform *leNditji
(<Lendizi> in the Bavarian Geographer).
