I have never seen this meaning of Creole : "a person of European ancestry
born in the colonies."
The word "petit blanc" (small white) better suits that meaning.

I'm not definitive but I'm ready to believe Gobineau's grand-mother was
black.

I think it hard to imagine somebody with clear European pedigree claim
Creole ancestors.
It's like being black and claiming Viking Pedigree !?
