I do think Sl * pUlstI 'felt' and Lith paustis 'animal hair' are
cognates, but I'll have to get into my theories to answer this. The
PIE words:
* pYuulós '(single) hair sticking straight up'
* pYuulstxós -stx,+ 'straight/smooth hair'
>
* pYuulstx,+ > * pYulustx,+ > Skt pulastí- 'wearing the hair
straight/smooth'
(in most positions u-u > u-0 but by R > u-a (* werwe:n urun+ > Skt
urana- 'ram')
* pYuulstx,+ > * pYulsti+ > Sl * pUlstI 'felt'
(Slavic usually retains uu as u: but delengthens with a R ending the
same syllable)
* pYuulstx,+ > * pYuwsti+ > Lith paustis 'animal hair'
(Baltic usually retains uu as u: but with a l ending the same syllable
it removes l (instead of one u like Sl) and the u moves to fill the
coda as w, uw > aw)
* pYuulstx,+ > * pYiilstx,+ > Germ. * filta- 'felt'
(pY changes long uu / u: > ii / i: ; s>0 between l_t like *gildan 'to
pay gold', *gilsta- 'payed, payment, wergild' > guilt)
* pYuulós > L pilus '(single) hair'
* kYaLpYuulós > L capillus 'hair' < *'covering of hair'
* pYuulyós > L pilleus 'felt cap' < *y 'on, in, at'
(pY changes long uu / u: > ii / i: ; later all ii>i, etc; there's
dissimilation of L-l (kYaL as in G kalupto: 'cover'; opt. uul > ull
(like Juppiter / Ju:piter later, etc.))
