I'm always curious about Hollywood stars speaking in
foreign languages.
I saw Vantage Point last week. It's set in Spain but
the Spanish sucks out loud and the audience was dying
laughing at "Spaniards" with American accents.
In Traffic, the Mexican actors obviously spoke great
Spanish but were funny as hell. Benicio del Toro
sounded like a retard because he just spoke textbook
Spanish with as neutral an accent as he could come up
with. Benjamin Bratt, who thinks he speaks Spanish,
choked, sounded like an American.
And so it is
In Indiana Jones, there's a scene in PerĂº, but with
Mexican music in the background --about as appropriate
as Country music in Harlem. Harrison Ford had the
sense to keep his mouth shut when they spoke to him in
Spanish.
