Libertarianism is a far right ideology rooted in the
minimal state that serves only to provide protection
and minimal infrastructure for the powerful. It is
essentially a traditional ultra-conservative state
stripped of all religious and cultural trappings.
El Salvador, where I've been for almost the last two
years is about as close as you can come to fulfilling
all the requisites for a Libertarian state and
needless to say, it is hell for all of its inhabitants
that aren't born into wealth.
In El Salvador, virtually all services are privatized,
usually in the hands of monopolies: water,
electricity, health, education, police, etc.
There is tap water but it's too dangerous to drink
because of microbes and heavy metals and the water
company is a private entity (non-profit for now), so
you have to buy bottled water --a for profit monopoly.
Electricity is a for-profit monopoly. Health is
private and is run through chains, and most people
can't afford it. Education is mainly private. There is
only one public university. Entrance is very
competitive but the government doesn't support it, so
only the children of people with adequate resources
can enter but there is a grossly inadequate
infrastructure. There are 2 Catholic universities and
the rest are for-profit diploma mills with attractive
campuses but they sell degrees. Policing is a
for-profit industry, dominated by 4 companies and most
if not all are based in the US. If you want police in
your neighborhood, you have to pay for private police.
There are no capital gains taxes, only on income and
sales. There are no labor codes worth the name. There
are no inspections of food or medicine, etc. The
government provides no social services except for
building highways as infrastructure for the powerful.
Most foreign-aid that comes in is passed along to
for-profit companies who administer it by putting it
in the pockets of the super rich.
This is the Libertarian paradise --corruption and
cynicism at the service of the powerful.
