I was able to read many pages of the Heggerty, MacMahon, and MacMahon
chapter through "Surprise me!" link. Their new idea is to build
trees based on phonetic similarities only to compliment the ususal
phylogenetic trees. At least One such tree of Romance languages
appears in the book.
