I don't know about Fähnrich, but Klimov uses the symbol *(s)
to denote a distinct PK phoneme, with correspondences Geo.
/s/, Zan /0/, Svan /l/ before a vowel, as in the "word
formation prefix" *(s)a- => Geo. sa-, Zan o-, Svan la-;
before a consonant we have Geo. r, Zan r/0, Svan l (as in PK
*(s)31e "milk": Geo. r3e-, Zan b3^a-/m3^a-, Svan l@3^e-).
I think it stands to reason that *(s) was something like /L/
(a voiceless lateral fricative).

Klimov's *(s)a-xl- "house" is derived from the verbal root
*xal- "to be near sth., among sth.".
