chronicle. The Caspian Sea was the "Khwalis Sea".
There is an additional complication (mentioned by
Pritsak in his "Khazarian Hebrew documents of the
tenth century"(pp.149-150, citing Ibn-Hauqal c.977
CE): "Khwalis" was also the name of the western part
of the Khazar capital on the Volga(a "twin" city),
inhabited by "Kalis-Khazars".****
